Frequently Asked Questions
Based on over 3 decades of teaching experience and observations, MATHNASIUM founder, Larry Martinek, devised a curriculum and an approach to teaching math, which is designed to develop children’s genuine “number sense” and a true understanding of how numbers work together, and then steadily increasing the scope and complexity of their understanding to various advanced math concepts.
The Mathnasium Method™ focuses on developing understanding of math concepts, “mathematical thinking” and the love and interest towards the subject, because when children love the subject, they will be naturally good at it.
Developed by a leading mathematics educator, MATHNASIUM is effective and highly specialised. Parents get to see the difference, and the results!
Parents get a periodic report on their child’s progress. Kids enjoy their workouts. Most importantly, they acquire Number Sense—the ability to think mathematically. We focus on building a solid foundation of skills, which will maximise your child’s success in school and beyond.
There is a wonderful side–benefit from this process: your child’s boosted self–confidence.
Mathnasium centres are active all year long, even during school holidays. Students typically attend twice a week after school for about an hour.
MATHNASIUM provides a welcoming environment with warmth and encouragement where children will receive both instruction and practice under the guidance of our Math instructors, who are trained and certified in our Method. Kids practice by doing highly prescriptive worksheets under direct supervision from the instructors.
Math deals with the development of basic computation skills as well as the ability to think logically and critically. The MATHNASIUM programme enhances both aspects by building genuine number sense as well as a thorough grounding in all necessary math concepts to ultimately develop problem solving skills.
Children receive both instruction and practice. Instruction is provided directly by instructors, who are Mathnasium trained. Your child will practice by doing highly prescriptive worksheets under direct supervision, in addition to exercises to develop problem solving and mathematical thinking skills.
In addition to helping students improve their mathematical skills, the programme provides skills that improve attitude in learning that will also benefit other subject areas.
Whether children are in International school or home school that follow Cambridge syllabus, or in National Schools that follow the Malaysian syllabus, they can greatly benefit from the Mathnasium programme.
The Mathnasium curriculum is highly complimentary and supplementary to most syllabi as the program is customisable to the needs of an individual child. Our approach of nurturing reasoning and problem solving skills are the main elements in developing higher order thinking students, which is also the major focus of recent math education development around the globe.
Also, despite regional differences in the mathematical curriculum around the world, there exists a high degree of general correlation. The programme covers counting, numbers, measurement, algebra, statistics, problem solving and reasoning.
Each child is assigned a completely customised set of working materials. We achieve this through our uniquely detailed and structured Assessment, which uses sophisticated techniques to determine – with great accuracy – what a student knows and does not know. Based on the individual diagnosis, we then tailor a personalised learning program.
This will be specifically designed to:
(a) build on that child’s strengths, especially on computational skill;
(b) work on the weak areas in detail; and
(c) a section to stretch that child’s capabilities steadily and help him/her achieve even more.
A Gifted child would be challenged by a learning programme which is appropriately advanced, while a child needing extra help would similarly be assigned material designed to improve their level to the required minimum.
There will be a portion of the material assigned to each child designed to maximise his/her potential. Thus our programme is designed to bring the best out of any child, regardless of his/her current ability.
